Gusto Guide

Are bread and water charged for?

Short answer

Bread is charged for in most tradesmen's restaurants, though the amount is small; in some places it is free. Water is always charged and comes bottled — tap water is not served. If you are asked “small or large”, that is the size of the bottle.

In a tradesmen's restaurant a basket of bread comes to the table and is usually added to the bill for a small amount. If you did not eat it, saying so is enough and it comes off. In pide and kebab houses bread is already part of the dish.

Water is certainly charged; serving tap water is not the custom in Turkish restaurants. A half-litre bottle is the most common measure. If you are offered ayran or şalgam alongside, that is not a sales push but a suggested match for the dish.

Tea may be offered after the meal; whether it was a gift shows on the receipt. The word “ikram” means it is free.
